Lake Michigan College honored for veteran efforts

At at a time where veterans issues are in the spotlight, Lake Michigan College is insuring that those who serve get the resources they need back home.

Lake Michigan College has earned Gold level status from the Michigan Veterans Affairs agency. they're the only school in Southwest Michigan with that distinction.

That comes as their enrollment for Veterans has seen a significant rise.

The college provides veteran specific advising and counseling, as well as a full-time veteran specialist, a veterans web portal, and easy acceptance of military transfer credits.

I sat down with an Iraq war vet and student, who says if it wasn't for LMC's programs, he doesn't know where he would be.

"My experience here has been a positive one," said Doug McCarron, an LMC student and disabled Iraq war veteran. "They treat me very well. They're very accommodating. The teachers help me through difficult times in difficult areas."

There is also a Veterans Education Assistance fund, which provides scholarships and assistance for vets and their dependents.

You can find out more about veteran education at Lake Michigan's website.
