LaPorte police investigating government grant phone scam

LaPorte police are investigating a fake call about a governmental grant.

The victim told police she received a phone call September 3rd and was told she qualified for a $5,000 government grant.

In order to get the money, she told police, she had to give the caller her debit card number and pay to have her account verified.

The victim checked her bank account and discovered a pending $60 unauthorized charge.

When she wasn’t able to get in touch with the company, she notified her bank of the fraudulent activity and immediately canceled her debit card.

The LaPorte Police Department Is asking the public to not give away personal or banking information over the phone.

Police say if you’re in doubt about a caller, contact local law enforcement before providing any information.
