ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. - The League of Women Voters of Elkhart County held a seminar on Thursday to discuss the high infant and maternal mortality rate in the county and in Indiana as a whole.
The seminar, held at Ivy Tech in Goshen, included staff from the Elkhart County Health Department's Healthy Beginnings program.
"A lot of them, especially here in Elkhart County, come down to safe sleep issues. So accidental suffocation and some unexplained," said Melanie Sizemore, Health Administrator for the Elkhart County Health Department. "So, we're working to educate people on how to prevent those and, you know, what common birth defects are, which some of them are not preventable."
