SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Fish fries during Lent have long been popular here in Michiana, home to a large Catholic population, but this year some organizers are having to improvise after many Knights of Columbus chapters are canceling theirs due to the coronavirus.
Vice President Mark Liszewski of Council 5521, located just south of South Bend, said each Friday during this year’s lent they’ve been serving folks in their cars.
“The shutdown of restaurants has made it hard for our patrons to come visit us and have dinner, so we decided to do a carry out drive-through,” Liszewski said.
“It’s not going to be as nice meals as if you were sitting down to enjoy them, but it’s fish fry and it’s Lent!”
Dozens of cars waited in line to get $10 adult and $4 child meals Friday, a sign of tradition continuing to burn on, even during a pandemic.
