ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. – The Penn Township Fire Department is celebrating one of their own who returned from a recent tour overseas. Sergeant Ron Johnson ironically returned on Veteran’s Day.
Sergeant Johnson was part of an Army medivac unit from Indiana that just completed a nine-month long combat tour in the Middle East.
Back at work, the Sergeant is now serving as the Chief of Emergency Medical Services at the fire department.
While on tour, he was on an American Army base that was attacked by Iranian missiles.
Sergeant Johnson said his whole experience was a real eye opener.
“When you deploy you get to actually put your skill set into operational use. You really see what sacrifices come with the job and it paints a new picture for what the guys men and women both went through in previous conflicts of military service,” said Ron Johnson, EMS Chief Penn Fire Dept.
Additionally, he is celebrating his 9th wedding anniversary.
Sergeant Johnson met his wife during a tour in the Middle East a decade ago.
ABC57 wants to thank Sergeant Johnson and all other veterans out there for their service.
