Local Girl Scouts receive award on International Day of the Girl

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind.—Three Girl Scouts from St. Joseph County were given awards on October 11, which is celebrated as the International Day of the Girl.

The Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana announced seven Girl Scout Gold awards total but three of them are going to girls from St. Joseph County.

Awards were earned by girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate “extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national and global challenges.”

Julia Jones, of New Carlisle, received an award for mounting a mural on the Wall of the American Legion to improve a blank cinder block wall. Her wall aims to provide a place for reflection for service men and women.

Katie Lo, of Granger, was awarded for organizing book drives, purchasing and building bookshelves and creating a library in a local foster organization for children who have difficulty getting books.

Elizabeth Mellor, of South Bend, earned an award for painting several games onto the parking lot at Holy Cross Grade School in South Bend for young children to enjoy.
