NOW: Local restaurant hosting a benefit to support a local teen battling cancer

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- The Sandbar & Grille in St. Joseph has been hosting a fundraiser on Thursday to donate all money made after 5 p.m. to the family of Mattox Williams, the St. Joseph High School freshman who is currently battling a rare form of cancer.

Family, friends, teammates and even strangers have gathered at the Sandbar Grille on Lakeshore Drive to eat, drink and help raise funds for Mattox’s treatment costs.

The 15-year-old, who is also known as "Smiley", used to play the forward position for his freshman basketball team at Saint Joseph High School before stepping away to start treatment on his bone cancer at the University of Michigan.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the benefit while the Sandbar Grille remains open on Thursday.

Anyone looking to help can also donate directly to Mattox’s GoFundMe page.
