Man accused of killing his mother in Coloma arraigned

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -

The man who is accused of killing 79-year-old Lavonne Monta was arraigned in a Berrien County Court on May 7.

Monta's body was found in her home in Coloma on April 24, 2015 after Coloma Township Police conducted a welfare check.

An autopsy determined her cause of death was homicide.

The investigation, including information from the scene and financial records, led police to search for Monta's son, Monty Menefee, 47.

After several days of searching, Menefee was found in Lake County, Ohio on April 29. He was arrested on an open murder warrant for homicide issued in Berrien County.

Menefee waived extradition and was taken to the Berrien County Jail. He was arraigned on May 7.

His bond was set at $1 million.
