Man falls through ice while crossing lake

LAPORTE, Ind. --- A LaPorte resident is lucky to be alive after he fell through the ice and nearly froze to death.

David Rogers was attempting to walk across Clear Lake on Sunday around 5p.m. when he encountered an area that was not fully frozen. He fell through the thin layer of ice into about eight feet of water.

A neighbor witnessed Rogers fall in and immediately dialed 911.

LaPorte City firefighters were on the scene with ice rescue equipment and were able to bring Rogers to safety.

Indiana Conservation Officers want to remind anyone going onto ice to check the thickness of the ice when approaching a new area. Ice is not the same in all areas on a lake, so be sure to plan ahead and be prepared.
