SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Police were called to the Stanley Clark School Thursday morning after Melvin Dennis Ward III attempted to enter the school, but the doors were locked, police said.

Officers were alerted over the radio Ward could be armed, police said.

A vehicle driven by Ward, attempted to hit the vehicle of the officer responding to the call.

The officer avoided the collision, but then Ward allegedly attempted to hit the patrol car again. He was unsuccessful.

The officer drove away and Ward allegedly chased the officer.

The pursuit started south on Miami to Ireland Road, west on Ireland Road, and north on Michigan. (Click here to view a map of the pursuit.)

Police said the chase ended at Main and Sample after Ward's vehicle crashed into a vehicle stopped for a traffic signal. The driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Ward allegedly struggled with police, but was taken into custody after a taser was deployed.

Ward was booked on preliminary charges of aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting law enforcement.

The Stanley Clark School posted this statement on their Facebook page regarding the incident:

The Stanley Clark School went on lockdown for approximately 15 minutes this morning following the entrance of an upset parent. We quickly instituted our lockdown procedures, which we practice regularly, and all children were immediately safe and well cared for. The South Bend Police were contacted and quickly on scene to handle the situation. Please know that all is well and classes have resumed to regular activities.
