Man in stolen Firebird leads Elkhart police officers on early morning chase

ELKHART, Ind. -- A man in a stolen Pontiac Firebird led Elkhart police on a chase before ditching the car and taking off on foot early this morning.

Elkhart Police Department officers say the man is in custody after a traffic stop in the area of N. Nappanee Street and Kilbourn Street went wrong just before 5:20 a.m.

"The Pontiac fled from the stop and a pursuit ensued," EPD said. "The male suspect ditched the vehicle near Kinro/Aeroplex and fled on foot. Officers, with the assistance of K9, located the male nearby and took him into custody shortly thereafter."

Police say the car was reported stolen out of Michigan and there were no other people in the car at the time of the stop.
