Man rescued from Paw Paw River after allegedly committing breaking and entering
Berrien County Sheriff\'s Office BERRIEN COUNTY, Ind. -- The Berrien County Sheriff's Office reports dispatch received several calls from the 5200 block of N. Watervliet Road in Watervliet Township around 10:08 p.m. on Nov. 7.
Callers reported a man in a what was described as a manic state appeared to have jumped from a home's window.
Several more callers stated the man, visibly injured, had then forced his way into another home before fleeing through the yard.
Deputies arrived to find the man, identified as a 43-year-old Edwardsburg man, standing in waist-deep water in the Paw Paw River near the N. Watervliet Road bridge.
Authorities described the man as being highly agitated. He was striking the water with a stick while repeatedly shouting for help.
Deputies say despite giving him self-rescue directions, the man was unable to do so.
A deputy and a Michigan State Police Trooper then entered the river and took physical control of the man.
The report states the man was combative throughout the encounter.
Authorities were able to get him out of the water and onto an ambulance stretcher.
He was taken to Corewell Health – St. Joseph for medical evaluation and treatment.
The incident report has been forwarded to the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office for review of potential charges related to the man's actions before entering the river.
His name will be released if charges are authorized.
