Man sentenced to 64 years for 2021 homicide

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A man will spend 64 years in prison for a fatal shooting in April 2021.

Dashawn Powell was sentenced Friday after being found guilty on all six charges: Murder, Aiding, Inducing or Causing Murder, Robbery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, Robbery Resulting in Bodily Injury, Armed Robbery and Robbery.

The shooting on April 27, 2021, resulted in the death of 26-year-old Olivia Carillo and injury to a 30-year-old South Bend man, at a home on the 600 block of South Illinois Street.

According to court documents, Powell had planned a drug deal with the male victim, before robbing the 30-year-old at gunpoint. During the robbery, there was a struggle over Powell's gun, before shots were fired at the man and into the home.

Powell's sentence in this case will run consecutively to his previous sentence in Ripley County, Indiana on several drug charges. Powell is serving 11 years in prison with three years suspended to probation.
