A fire in South Bend leaves building ablaze
BENTON HARBOR, Mich.— ABC57 tagged along and got a look at the troubled public housing complex in the heart of Benton Harbor as Mayor Marcus Muhammad and Representative Bill Huizenga took a tour to see the issues plaguing the complex firsthand, after receiving cries for help from residents.
They hope they can turn things around for residents and the nearly 60-year-old tower that's had its fair share of struggles ranging from crime to infestations and structural problems.
While new management has made good changes for the eight-story building, Mayor Marcus Muhammad said it needs much more than a little “TLC”
"Harbor Towers has been a trouble source for as long as I can remember. And now that I'm in government, it’s been one of the gray hairs on my head, and it's gotten to a place that can not be sustained,” said Mayor Muhammad.
Huizenga says he will report back everything he saw on the tour to the Department of Urban Housing Development and hopes they can come up with a plan.
"Ultimately, I want to make sure that the residents and the citizens have a clean safe environment that they can live, and feel good about that,” said the Representative of the 4th District.
