Mega Adoption Extravaganza at the Humane Society through June 14

The Mega Adoption Extravaganza begins on Friday at the Humane Society of St. Joseph County.

The shelter has about 100 cats and more than 100 dogs waiting to be adopted, along with other small animals.

“All the dogs and cats are spayed and neutered. They're micro-chipped, they're vaccinated, they're up to date on all of their vaccines and they've had a fecal check. They're just in need of a home,” said Assistant Director Genny Carlson.

She said this is the biggest adoption event they have had and that every year it has grown. The event is needed because they are running out of room to keep the animals.

“We have nine community cat rooms and we have some individual cages as well. Each cat room has anywhere from nine to 12 cats in it each so we have about a 100 cats in our adoption center right now. We have others waiting in a holding area right now so when these kittens find a home, we'll have more brought in," said Carlson.

During the extravaganza, pet adoption fees will either be reduced or waived.

"We're going to be giving cats away with no adoption fee but you still have to fill out an adoption application. For the dogs, their adoption fee will be reduced from $200 to $100 for most of the dogs," Carlson added.

The pet adoption extravaganza will go until June 14th and the adoption hours will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
