Memorial Day travel taking off in Michiana

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and behind the wheel or above the clouds, it's shaping up to be one of the busiest Memorial Day travel weekends.

AAA projects 3.61 million people will travel by air, nearly a 2% jump from last year’s 3.55 million.

Vice President of Marketing at the South Bend International Airport Julie Curtis recommends for passengers to download the airline's app to check in easier and get the mobile boarding pass. She also reminds travelers to remember the TSA's 3-1-1 rule: one quart-sized bag per person, with liquids no more than 3.4 ounces each. Renovations are underway at the airport, she says there will be no impact on flights.

Things are speeding up at the Indiana Toll Road. AAA predicts 39 million people will travel by car.

Extra police and roadway patrols will be in place for the holiday weekend, with staff ready to assist drivers and respond to any issues.

A construction project in Steuben and LaGrange counties will continue with lane restrictions, but all other work on the toll road is paused to keep traffic flowing.

Many people are expected to hit the roads and skies; they're also expected to hit the beaches.

Berrien County Undersheriff Greg Sanders says while he wants everyone to have a great time, he wants them to be safe as well. He says there is absolutely no alcohol, drugs and glass allowed at the beach. He says to stay out of the water if there's a red flag. He wants to remind visitors of St. Jospeh's new downtown paid parking and to plan accordingly.

With roads packed, deputies will also be out, watching for distracted drivers and speeding.
