Mentone man sentenced to prison for injuring daughter
Kaiden Meade KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. -- Documents from Kosciusko County Superior Court reveal 21-year-old Kaiden Meade of Mentone was sentenced to prison on Oct. 29 for injuring his daughter.
Meade was found guilty of Domestic Battery with Serious Bodily Injury to Person Under 14 and sentenced to nine years in prison with an additional three years of probation.
The jury couldn't come to an agreement for his charge of Obstruction of Justice.
Court documents reveal on Feb. 26, 2023, at 11:03 p.m., a deputy from the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Office responded to a home regarding a baby with trauma.
Authorities and medics were told by Meade that he had put his daughter to bed around 9:30 p.m., but she then woke up and became fussy around 10:30 p.m.
Meade said that's when he went to pick her up but started to drop her over the crib at which point he grabbed her to stop her from falling.
That's when Meade said her neck snapped backwards while catching her. Meade said that's when he noticed his daughter's arms moving differently and that her eyes looked different.
Meade said that's when he woke up his mother and called the child's mom, who was at work.
The responding officer asked Meade about cuts on his knuckles that were scabbed over, to which he responded he had gotten angry a few weeks before while arguing with the child's mom and went outside to punch the shed.
Authorities say they spoke to the child's mom and asked if Meade had ever been aggressive. She responded, "No, never towards the baby."
Later at the hospital, Meade was captured on bodycam footage telling law enforcement he picked up his daughter from the crib and while walking into the other room, he tripped over a baby gate in the doorway.
Meade said when he tripped, he lost hold of her and started to drop the baby. He said that's when he grabbed her, not letting her hit the ground. Authorities say tripping over a baby gate was not mentioned before or later when questioned again.
The child was then airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital for treatment.
The child was admitted to the hospital's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit with a brain bleed.
The medical team's assessment revealed the girl sustained preretinal, intraretinal, and subretinal hemorrhages, along with a subdural hematoma.
The girl's diagnosis was that the injuries weren't accidental and were inconsistent with the reported history given by Meade.
