Mercedes comes back to Michiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It has been more than 5 decade since Mercedes-Benz called Michiana home. Now, 57 years later, Mercedes is back in Michiana in a partnership with AM General.

The story between Michiana and Mercedes began in 1958.

"Studebaker was looking for ways to add money to their coffers and one way they did that was taking over the North American distribution rights for Mercedes Benz," says Andrew Beckman, Archivist for the Studebaker Museum.

Beckman believes he knows why Mercedes picked St. Joseph County as one of their assembly locations.

"This area has proven we can put together some pretty good automobiles," says Beckman.
