13-year-old killed in Hickory Village shooting
MISHAWAKA, Ind. - An attempted home invasion in a Mishawaka apartment complex left a 13-year-old boy dead Tuesday night. But it’s not yet clear if he was a suspect in the invasion or an innocent victim.
Mishawaka Police were called to the Hickory Village Apartment complex on Hickory Road just before 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
They responded to reports of a shooting and found the 13-year-old dead at the scene.
Moments after our 5 p.m. report on Wednesday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office identified the boy as Tyshawn Taylor.
St. Joseph County Metro Homicide was called in late Tuesday night.
Investigators spent the early morning hours on Wednesday gathering evidence.
The prosecutor's office said Wednesday afternoon that Taylor died during an attempted home invasion of a Hickory Village apartment.
Things quieted down at the complex by Wednesday morning, but leftover police tape was still visible.
Neighbors living in the complex said it’s a scary crime that hits close to home.
“My daughter called to check on me and said, ‘Mom, something’s going on,’” said Darlene Horton, who lives in Hickory Village. “I got up and I seen the lights out here. So I went to peeping out and seeing what was going on – trying to see what was going on. I see the police all over at the – over there in that church lot and I seen this yellow tape; I really got scared then, looking out my bedroom window.”
The prosecutor’s office said Wednesday afternoon that no arrests have been made yet and the investigation is still ongoing.
While it’s still not clear if Taylor was involved in the attempted home invasion, we learned Wednesday that an autopsy will be performed on his body on Thursday.
Dozens of people were posting “Rest in Peace” tributes on Facebook on Wednesday about Taylor.
