ELKHART COUNTY, Ind.  - A Michiana gym is standing up to bullying. Steve’s Gym/ Elkhart Martial Arts is holding an anti-bullying workshop Saturday, April 2, that aims to combat what some are calling a rising-bullying issue in the community.

In recent weeks, multiple bullying incidents have been reported at different Elkhart schools and to help teach kids to defend themselves, Steve’s Gym is holding an anti-bullying workshop for kids ages five and up.

“We’re going to be showing them kind of what to do when they get pushed, we’re going to be showing them a nice stance, have their hands up, without their hand in fists like their fighting. We’re going to be showing them from a basic grab how to get out,” said Brittany Mosier, the manager and instructor at Steve’s Gym.

Mosier said they’ll be teaching students de-escalating techniques and inner confidence. She said many of her students who attend the martial arts gym- are there because they’ve gotten bullied themselves. And when 12-year-old Rio Allred, a North Side Middle schooler took her own life due to the severe bullying she was experiencing, the staff at Steve’s Gym wanted to help so it wouldn't happen again.

Their anti-bullying workshop plans to teach students how to better protect themselves in and out of the classroom.

“Them just learning confidence for one, can stop the bullying altogether, being able to defend themselves, being able to tell someone to stop, stand up for themselves it's so important, I mean its one of the most important things that kids can learn,” Mosier said.

Over 50 students have already registered for the anti-bullying workshop. And due to the high demand, there is a waitlist. If you would like to sign up you can go here.

The gym plans to hold more workshops like this one in the future. For more information and to stay updated on go  Steve's Gym/ Elkhart Martial Arts Facebook page.
