Michiana nonprofit raises money for the homeless

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -

The nonprofit, Michiana 5 for the Homeless, is hoping to bring attention to homelessness in the city.

The organization hosted an event near Four Winds Field on Monday.

Boxes were set up along South Street to represent businesses that support the homeless.

A box went for about $35.00 and nearly 50 boxes were available.

We need more housing, but even if we had 1,000 buildings and 1,000 beds, to be quite honest that wouldn't be enough. It's a quick fix for a very serious problem. What needs to happen is, we need to find permanent housing. All the agencies that deal with homeless need to connect and we need to combine our efforts and our resources to help these people,” said Clara Ross, event planner of Michiana 5 for the Homeless.

The goal was to raise $5,000 and event included free warm drinks and entertainment.
