Michigan City man sentenced for unlawful possession of a firearm after feeing traffic stop
ABC 57 SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Tuesday, 29-year-old Dontia Grant of Michigan City was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Cristal C. Brisco to 66 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release after pleading guilty to being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Grant was pulled over in Michigan City for speeding. After being asked for his license and registration by a police officer, Grant drove away from the traffic stop and led police on a pursuit or a mile and a half before jumping out of his car and running away.
When police caught up to Grant, they found that he was in possession of a loaded pistol with a 20-round extended magazine.
Grant has prior felony convictions including unlawful transfer of a firearm and resisting law enforcement; those prior convictions prohibit him from possessing a firearm.
