Michigan elementary music teacher removes 'gay' from Christmas carol

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. -- A traditional Christmas carol is at the center of controversy at a Michigan elementary school.

A Traverse City music teacher changed the lyrics to "Deck the Halls" after students laughed at the word "gay.”

The word means "happy" or "joyful" in the carol, but the teacher decided to alter the verse to "don we now our 'bright' apparel."

The principal was shocked by the switch. He wishes the teacher had used the carol as a teaching tool.

"We have an anti-bullying and discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation and so going forward,” said Principal Chris Parker. “The teacher will be addressing 'this is how we're supposed to be reacting.  This is the way to be respectful about this.'"

Many parents say the teacher's decision to change the lyrics was completely inappropriate.
