LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- This year’s Military Veteran Stand Down at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds will look different than in previous years due to COVID-19.

What used to be an event for veterans to gather will now be a drive-thru event. Veterans will receive a survival backpack, hygiene kits, a free meal, and some clothing.

Goodwill Industries President and CEO Debie Coble said a service tent is available for walk-ups for veterans who don’t have access to a car.

“It is an opportunity for the community to say thank you,” Coble said. “We have men and women who have served this county so faithfully and it is our day to say, we just want you to know how much we appreciate it.”

Veterans must bring a military ID. The goal is to help local veterans and their families going through tough situations, get the resources they need.

The term ‘stand-down’ came during the Vietnam War. During that time, Troops were sent to a safe place away from the battlefield to take a break and to get the care they need.

The event on Friday, August 7, will continue to care for struggling veterans. Veterans can still take part in the drive-thru event if they don't live in the county.

“We all are continuing to practice social distancing and we'ere mask-wearing, whichever is appropriate,” Coble said. “Know that we are doing everything we can to ensure your safety for this event and yet, we have to be able to say thank you.”

The drive-thru event runs from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. central time at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds on Friday, August 7, 2020. Veterans can pre-register at https://forms.gle/62Lt4ikU6GUCZKzZ9
