Mishawaka man charged with beating his pregnant ex-girlfriend Friday

St. Joseph County Jail

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- On Friday, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s Office charged 35-year-old Edward Will Booker III with six counts stemming from a domestic violence call Thursday morning.

The Mishawaka Police Department says officers were called to the 220 block of East 8th Street in Mishawaka around 10:56 a.m. on May 22 for reports of Booker beating his ex-girlfriend, who shares one child with Booker and is eight months pregnant with a second.

Once on scene, officers were advised that Booker had been beating the woman since an argument started the night before, and that he had her locked in a room and would not let her out.

When approached, Booker locked the door to the residence and would only communicate by shouting through the door. The owner of the residence, Booker's mother, granted authorities access to the home.

"While the officers were entering, Booker exited the apartment through a back window and fled on foot. Officer commanded him to stop but Booker fled before they could take him into custody,"  officers said.

A little ways away, in the area of Summit and 9th Streets, police recovered a cellphone that had a lock screen with picture of Booker and a child.

Authorities say the victim had multiple visible injuries including both eyes swollen shut.

"She was bruised and bloody with marks on her body consistent with strangulation as well as large bruises on her abdomen and sides," the report states.

"[She] refused medical attention at the scene. She stated that she did not recall anything that had occurred in the prior 24 hours. The Danger Assessment for Law Enforcement (DA-LE) was conducted and [the victim's] answers indicated that she was at risk. Despite this, [she] refused the referral to the YWCA."

Other residents of the house told authorities Booker has a long history of violence against the victim and that Booker was sending them videos of the victim bloody in the bathroom. In at least one video, Booker could be heard threatening the victim, stating that he would "beat her *** again."

At around 4:06 p.m. the same day, a South Bend Police Officer was on patrol in the area of the Beacon Heights apartment complex at 3401 Ardmore Trail when he noticed a brown Chevrolet Express with no license plate near the back of the complex.

The report states that Booker got out of the Chevy and the officer approached, noticing the victim in the vehicle that Booker had just gotten out of.

"Booker stated that it was his sister and they were arguing over something small," authorities said.

"The officer advised Booker that he knew who he was and knew his name. Booker attempted to identify himself by the name 'David Daniels' and then Booker started to walk away. The officer commanded Booker to stop walking away and put his hands behind his back."

The report states that Booker yelled back at the officer, "You're tripping," before he kicked off his slide style sandals and began running.

He ran behind houses in the 3530 block of Putnam Place.

"The officer found that the only place Booker could have gone was inside one of the residences," authorities said.

While the officer remained at the target residence waiting for a canine unit, he knocked on the door and was greeted by a woman who stated that no one else was in the house but, "appeared timid as if she did not want to answer."

A few moments later, the woman exited the residence with two of her children saying, "I don't know who that man is but he is inside of the house."

She later told police that she had been upstairs in her apartment when she heard the dog barking and, when she walked out of her bedroom, she saw Booker walking up the stairs.

Booker allegedly told her he was not going to hurt her, that the police were chasing him, and he needed a place to hide.

The woman told police that she did not know Booker and did not give him permission to enter her home.

Officers eventually entered the home and took Booker into custody at gunpoint.

"Booker physically resisted the officers by locking his arms so they could not get him into handcuffs," authorities said.

"They were ultimately able to get Booker secured and transported him to the St. Joseph County Jail. Officers observed [the victim] and saw the bruises on her face. She was later arrested on outstanding warrants and taken to Memorial Hospital for medical treatment."
