Missing canoeist found in Berrien County Lake

STEVENSVILLE, Mich. -- According to the Lincoln Township Police Department, a missing canoeist has been found after at approximately 9:15 p.m. on April 17, officers were contacted by Berrien County Dispatch for a reported overturned canoeist.

The canoeist was due to be picked up from the beach at Grand Mere State Park according to dispatch. 

The caller last spoke with the subject on the phone near the Chalets on the Lake located in the 5300 block of Notre Dame Avenue.

Witnesses at the Chalets on the Lake did report seeing the canoeist.

Lincoln Township Police contacted the St. Joseph Township Police Department and Great Lake Rescue to deploy drones equipped with thermal imaging. The subject had not been located.

The US Coast Guard was contacted and deployed to the area and began searching. Due to inclement weather the search had to be delayed.

The U.S. Coast Guard began their search on Saturday morning.

The subjects cell phone was also pinged for location with no effect.

The missing subject was a 6’2 white male, and 250 lbs. He was last seen in a green canoe approximately 12 to 14 feet long, with a small trolling motor attached.

Lincoln Township Police say further details will be given as time allows.
