BENTON HARBOR, Mich – There are more confirmed cases of the deadly EEE virus in Michiana.
There seven known cases of the virus statewide and three of those people have died.
“I’m concerned about that EEE, that bug, the mosquito is why don’t they come out earlier and check,” Farmer and Brother-In-Law of Bill Teichman Glen Devalk said.
Teichman is the confirmed case of EEE in Berrien County.
Teichman owns and operates the Tree-Mendus-Fruit farm in Eau Claire.
There is a second case under investigation in Berrien County of another farmer in Eau Claire.
On Tuesday afternoon the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services confirmed there are also cases of the virus in Barry, Cass, Van Buren and Kalamazoo Counties.
Local farmers market employee Denise Yates said she is taking extra safety precautions because of the recent cases of EEE.
I don’t know that there’s much protection, I mean DEET and off or going in at dusk which is what we’ll be doing.
Health officials are urging local schools to avoid mosquitoes by limiting outdoor activities.
