SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Bissell Street shooting took the lives of three victims, and Keimisha Dillard, the mother of one of the victims, is grieving while still searching for answers.

22-year-old Geimisha Broadnax was in South Bend Sept. 19, tailgating for Notre Dame football and searching for jobs when her life was tragically taken away from her. She’s originally from South Bend, lived in Indianapolis, and wanted to move back to South Bend.

Broadnax leaves behind her parents and three brothers.

“I’m trying to stay strong,” Dillard says.

“It still seems unreal because never in a million years would I have thought my child would have been shot. I have my moments, I look at pictures, and I cry. I had a doctor’s appointment yesterday and me and Geimisha had the same doctor, so me and her cried yesterday together at my appointment, and it’s hard.”

Dillard spoke with ABC57 Wednesday and has one message for the victim: “I just wish they could turn themselves in, so that I can have justice [and] Geimisha can rest peacefully.”

Broadnax graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in May and majored in tourism, hospitality management and Sports Management. Her mom shares she had dreams of planning events for sports teams.

Dillard shares she wants her daughter to be remembered for her kindness and compassion to all.

“I had a young lady message me and say that when they were in middle school and she transferred to the school, she was being bullied by everybody else, but Geimisha was her friend. Geimisha was nice to her,” Dillard says.

Dillard has received negative comments surrounding the nature of her only daughter’s death and wants to reiterate she was not caught up in the wrong crowd.

“That wasn’t her scene,” she shares.

“And I look at the comments and everyone’s like, ‘If you trained your child right, they wouldn’t be in those situations,’ [and] I did.”

Dillard is grieving the death of her daughter while the gunman is still out at large.

ABC57 News reached out to South Bend Police Department for any updates surrounding the case, including if it’s related to the shooting on Eddy Street that occurred the same night, but the Department has no new information available to the public.
