Motorist drives into pond after suffering from apparent medical issue

CASS COUNTY, Ind. – Cass County deputies say a motorist drove into a pond after suffering from an unknown medical issue Tuesday morning.

At approximately 6:30 a.m., deputies responded to a crash with injuries on M40 north of Bair Lake Street.

A preliminary investigation shows 51-year-old Elkhart resident Alfred Hooker was traveling north on M40 when he suffered a medical issue, police say.

Hooker told deputies dizziness caused him to try to pull to the right side of the roadway where his vehicle veered into a pond.

Hooker was able to safely evacuate the vehicle and get to shore where he was assisted by a passerby.

Newberg Ambulance transported Hooker to an area hospital.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and a seatbelt was worn.

The crash is under investigation.

Newberg Ambulance and Newberg Fire Department assisted at the scene.
