'Movies in the Park' to screen 'A League of Their Own' in honor of Betsey 'Sockum' Jochum

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Venues, Parks, and Arts announced it will hold a special screening of the 1992 film, "A League of Their Own," on Friday night in honor of the late Betsey 'Sockum' Jochum, and as part of their "Movies in the Park" series at Howard Park.
Jochum, a women’s baseball trailblazer and community icon, passed away on May 31, at the age of 104.
The screening will begin at 6 p.m. with a celebration of baseball history and community fun.
Organizers say there will be games, giveaways, and entertainment, including a juggling show from the Michiana Jugglers Association.
Waka Dog Café will also be on-site selling hot dogs as part of the full ballpark experience.
The film starts at 6:30 p.m.
Attendees are encouraged to wear their favorite baseball jerseys to match the theme.
The event will also act as tribute to all of the pioneering women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, who inspired "A League of Their Own."
The city was home to the South Bend Blue Sox and played a vital role in that history.
The History Museum, which serves as the national repository for the AAGPBL’s legacy, will be at the event with a display table featuring rare artifacts from their collection, including signed bats, gloves, uniforms, and caps, many of which were used by the players themselves.
"Movies at the Park" schedule:
- June 13 - "A League of Their Own" (1992)
- July 4: "Shrek" (2001) at 8 p.m. followed by fireworks
- Aug. 15: "Finding Nemo" (2003)
- Oct. 17: "Coco" (2017)
The History Museum will also display personal memorabilia, including Jochum's baseball cards and photographs, as the community honors her life and legacy with the special memorial tribute.
