Multi-county police pursuit leads to arrest of New York man

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana State Police report a New York man is currently in jail after leading a police chase involving multiple agencies through four counties on Thursday.

Police say around 8:20 a.m., Thursday, a trooper attempted to stop a gray Kia for speeding un the westbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road near mile-marker 93 in Elkhart County.

The trooper said as soon as he turned on his emergency lights the Kia sped off.

The driver, later identified as 28-year-old Daniyal Zaidi of Jamaica, N.Y., continued speeding west on the Toll Road into St. Joseph County, avoiding stop sticks that assisting officers deployed.

The pursuit led into La Porte County where Zaidi avoided more stop sticks that were deployed before exiting onto S.R. 421 and heading north.

Zaidi continued onto I-94, heading west before exiting north onto S.R. 49. He then turned around and went south. Zaidi approached two busy intersections before pausing to disregard the red light and continuing south approaching the Indiana Toll Road.

Zaidi entered the westbound lanes of the Toll Road at speeds of around 120 miles per hour.

Troopers then successfully deployed stop sticks near mile-marker 26. Zaidi continued west through the Portage Barrier Toll Plaza before driving into a ditch on the north side of the roadway, coming to a stop.

Zaidi followed verbal commands given during a felony stop and was safely taken into custody.

Zaidi was taken to the Elkhart County Jail for Resisting Law Enforcement and Reckless Driving.
