MICHIGAN. -- More information of the Friday March 6th storms in Southwest Michigan is being provided from the National Weather Service's Preliminary Storm report.
EDWARDSBURG, MI--The tornado was confirmed to be an EF-1, with estimated peak winds of 95 mph. The initially disorganized tornado touched down just northeast of the intersection of Runkle Street and Conrad Road at 3:11 PM, damaging the front face of a home and its garage. There was one fatality, a 12-year-old boy, confirmed at the home. The tornado widened and intensified, resulting in peak damage between Hess Road and M-62. Several trees were snapped and uprooted. The tornado was on the ground for 13.40 miles before it lifted east of South and Walnut Road at 3:35 PM.
THREE RIVERS, MI--The tornado was confirmed to be an EF-2, with estimated peak winds of 130 mph. There were several commercial structures damaged near M-60 and West Broadway Street. There were zero fatalities and 10 injuries. Survey efforts will continue in Three Rivers Monday, March 9th.
UNION LAKE/CITY, MI-- The tornado was confirmed to be an EF-3. The NWS increased the estimated peak winds to 160 mph. The tornado touched down at 4:35 PM on the northwest side of Union Lake in quickly intensified along the northwest shoreline. Several homes were destroyed accompanied by many sheared trees. A mobile home was picked up thrown 100 yards with a resident suffering fatal injury. The tornado traveled 3.70 miles before it lost intensity and lifted at 4:42 PM. There were three confirmed fatalities and 12 injuries.
The NWS also has confirmed a fourth tornado in Calhoun County. It spawned from the same storm cell that produced the tornadoes in Edwardsburg, Three Rivers, and Union City. It was ranked an EF-0 with estimated peak winds of 85 mph.
