National Park Service to conduct prescribed burns at Indiana Dunes

GARY, Ind. -- On Tuesday, the National Park Service announced it will conduct six prescribed burns inside the Indiana Dunes this fall.

All of the burns will be done in Gary area. The burns are designed to remove accumulated dead plant material and reducing the threat of uncontrolled wild land fires in and near the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

These controlled burns also promote the healthy growth of native plants that support a variety of birds and other animals.
