In an effort to raise awareness about heart disease in women, National Wear Red Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of February.
This campaign also serves as encouragement for women reach out to health experts about their risk for heart disease and how to lower that risk.
"As women, we tend to not always put our own care and our own health before the others in our lives. The problem with that is heart disease and signs of stroke in women present themselves differently than they do in men,” said Amy Kintz, Executive Leadership Chair of Michiana Goes Red for Women.
Experts say 80 percent of strokes and heart disease cases are preventable. However, they still account for a third of all causes of death for women.
