Nearly a dozen departments fight New Carlisle scrapyard fire for eight hours

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. -- Nearly a dozen fire departments responded to OmniSource in the 54000 block of Similax Road for a large scrapyard fire Tuesday afternoon.

The New Carlisle Fire Department reports units responded to the scene around 3:30 p.m.

Additional resources were requested, including tanker support for a water shuttle operation, after units witnessed a large column of smoke coming from the scene while enroute.

The fire was located and contained to a material pile. OmniSource is a metal shredding and recycling facility.

NCFD was assisted by at least 10 other local fire departments.

Crews were on scene for about eight hours. No injuries have been reported.

Due to the significant amount of water needed, a water shuttle operation was conducted so water could be hauled to the scene without overwhelming New Carlisle's water system.

Fire officials say they were also able to utilize Hamilton Grove’s private water system to fill tankers.

Fire officials noted this is not the first significant fire at this facility, which was taken over by OmniSource in 2020.

Officials say since then, the company has added safety procedures to reduce the frequency and severity of these incidents.

Fire officials say the last large incident at this facility happened in 2021.
