Neighbors heard explosion before house erupted in flames

The Elkhart Fire Department responded to a house fire caused by an explosion around 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at a home in the 3200 block of Neff Street, according to our reporting partners at The Elkhart Truth.

The residents were not home at the time of the reported explosion.

Their dog and cat were rescued from inside the home. Their dog was given oxygen after it was rescued and the cat suffered some burns, according to The Truth.

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion before seeing the house on fire.

Elkhart Assistant Fire Chief Steve Kamp told The Truth the house had major structural damage.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
