NOW: Neighbors speak out about gun violence in their community

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- A neighborhood on the Northwest side of South Bend is shaken by gun violence again Thursday morning.

It happened at around 2:15 am when police were called to the 1000 block of N. Brookfield street for a ShotSpotter alert. Twenty-four-year-old Taveyon Colon was pronounced dead at the scene.

“I don’t want to be the mom who gets the phone call that their child was involved in something like this," said a neighbor.

Colon's young age striking a chord for many living in the neighborhood.

“This young man was 24 years old. He could have turned his life around tomorrow if he met the right person and now he will never ever have the chance to do that," said a neighbor.

The deadly shooting is sadly not the first for the neighborhood.

Police were called to this exact street back in October of last year where they found 16-year-old Frederick Williams dead after being shot up while sitting inside a vehicle.

It’s leaving many to wonder how things could ever get better here.

“These are babies these are kids and somethings gotta give. Whether it’s from the police department whether it’s the parents whether it’s education at school I don’t know. I don’t know how to fix it, but something has got to give," said a neighbor.

Police haven’t arrested the person who pulled the trigger yet and haven’t passed along any suspect description. If you know anything about what happened – you should call Michiana Crimestoppers at 574-288-STOP or 800-342-STOP.
