New Big Cat Exhibit project unveiled for Washington Park Zoo

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Washington Park Zoo revealed a major update to expand their African Lion and Bengal Tiger enclosures.

The $1.6 million-dollar project is set to commence starting July 5 with an opening in 2023.

This renovation would build upon the current 1975 habitats, providing an additional 3,000 square feet for the big cats. New enclosures would also include more climbing areas and opportunities for enrichment activities.

In addition, visitors will be treated with an enhanced educational experience outside the exhibit.

Though the current exhibit matches national standards, this update is being implemented as a part of the zoo’s 5-Year Strategic Plan. The plan includes further renovations of their historic monkey island, the building of a free-flight aviary, and a new classroom and gift shop building.
