Amazon data center in New Carlisle cited by IDEM for impacting wetlands without authorization

NEW CARLISLE, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Environmental Management informed ABC57 that they sent Amazon a deficient application and non-compliance letter regarding their New Carlisle data center.
IDEM says Amazon was cited for impacting wetlands without authorization.
The letter also requested additional information from the applicant, Amazon.
Amazon was instructed to cease all construction activities in waters of the state until they obtain the necessary authorization.
Amazon has also withdrawn their application dated January 15, 2025.
IDEM and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are working with the company to address the violation, and IDEM expects an application resubmittal later this year.
The resubmittal for Section 401 Water Quality Certification application must account for the unauthorized activity and provide additional mitigation for the noted impacts.
