New Deputy Mayor starts first full week on job

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- There's a officially a new leader in South Bend. Deputy Mayor Mark Neal started his first full week in his new position Monday.


Mayor Pete Buttigieg is away training for his deployment to Afghanistan.


Neal is the former city controller and he's now in charge of overseeing the more than 100,000 people in South Bend.


His initial schedule for the week includes everything from city parks meetings, talking with 2nd grade students about government and a meeting on improving Jefferson Boulevard's street-scape.


Buttigieg is scheduled to be gone until the fall.
