New overpass causing controversy for South Bend residents

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-In South Bend, a plan to build a new overpass is causing major controversy.

INDOT says the city needs an overpass to give emergency vehicles more access, but people in the neighborhood say it will bring too much traffic along with it. The bridge will connect Fellows Street and Jackson Road in South Bend, traveling over U.S. 20.

People in the area say the residential streets are too narrow, and there are only a few sidewalks in the area. They say that's simply not safe. Once the bridge extension is complete, traffic is expected to double.

INDOT says it will break ground on the bridge next summer.
