New skating rink opens in Mishawaka

MISHAWAKA, Ind. – It’s an old tradition making a comeback in Mishawaka. The old Regal Lanes bowling alley on 8th Street was put up for sale as a warehouse but one Mishawaka local had a different idea.

One year later, Steve Phillips opened up the Michiana Roller Skating Rink.

The skating ring is 16,000 square feet, the largest in the Midwest.

“I’m bringing back some old memories,” says Phillips who remembers skating at USA Skate when he was growing up.

“Now there’s something on south side for our children to do instead of coming over to the north side,” says Lieutenant Tim Williams with Mishawaka Police.

This new addition means more to the community than just new business.

“It stresses something positive for our children to do,” says Lt. Williams.

Lt. Williams teaches D.A.R.E and driver’s education so you can say, he knows the kids he protects and serves pretty well.

“I want our children to find their natural high,” says Lt. Williams, saying a natural high is an activity like roller skating.

It also provides more opportunities to keep kids out of trouble.

“It’s a clean atmosphere, safe,” says Phillips.

Phillips is also bringing in Star Light Pizza to the rink.
