South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Notre Dame officials unveiled plans for a monument featuring Father Theodore Hesburgh and Dr Martin Luther King Jr on Wednesday.
It will be created by a local sculptor and installed in downtown South Bend.
The sculpture will be paid for through donations.
The monument will show the two men holding hands. It is a scene from a 1964 civil rights rally in Chicago.
The statue should be complete by next summer.
