Newborns to receive red hats in February

The American Heart Association's Little Hats, Big Hearts program will be donating more than 5,000 red hats to newborns born in Indiana in February.

The hats will be distributed to 44 hospitals across the state. The hats were knitted by volunteers.

February is American Heart Month and the week of Feb. 7-14 is Congenital Heart Defect Awareness Week.

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States and congenital heart defects are the leading birth defect in newborns.

The Little Hats, Big Hearts program raises awareness about both.

Participating hospitals in Michiana include:

  • Elkhart General Hospital
  • IU Health Goshen Hospital
  • Memorial Hospital (South Bend)
  • St. Joseph Health System (Mishawaka)
