Next steps to create affordable housing options

Housing activists in South Bend will present ways to improve the city’s housing landscape at a public meeting Monday night.

The meeting comes just weeks before the 1,000 houses in 1,000 days initiative is expected to officially be complete.

On Monday night, activists will talk about the future of housing in South Bend

The city is ahead of schedule in addressing its 1,000 houses in 1,000 days which means on Monday night, community leaders will be taking a proactive approach

Community leaders will focus on what to do with empty lots and how to provide mixed income development that won’t displace neighborhood residents.

The Neighborhood Development Associates will present the top five ways to improve access to affordable housing on the west side.

The Community Forum for Economic Justice will talk about ways to prevent a new wave of vacant and abandoned homes.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. Monday night at LaSalle Branch Library.

A representative from the Affordable Housing Committee will also be present, summarizing and critiquing current housing assistance programs in South Bend.
