Niles Fire Department gets new thermal imaging camera

NILES, Mich. -

At Monday's City Council meeting, the board approved the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera system for the Niles Fire Department.

Because the camera sees temperature instead of light, fire crews can use it in the dark and through heavy smoke to see where a fire is coming from and to find any victims.

The department has not purchased a new camera in over a decade.

The new camera will cost $7,699, 95% of the cost will be covered by the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The remaining $384 will come from the Fire Departments Safety Equipment Line.
