Niles High School student hit by car on way to school

NILES, Mich. -- A 16-year-old Niles High School student was hit by a car while crossing Eagle Street around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to Niles Police.

The student was taken to Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Police did not have information on the student's condition.

The school district confirmed the driver was a staff member of the school.

"An accident took place this morning involving a Niles High School student. Police and emergency vehicles were called and the student was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. The district has confirmed the driver of the vehicle involved was a staff member.  The district has had no further updates on the student's condition."

The investigation is ongoing but police say speed and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors.
