Niles Public Library kicks off "Food for Fines"

NILES, Mich. -- If you've got a few library fines, one local library has a creative way for you to pay them back.

The Niles Public Library has kicked off its "Food for Fines" fundraiser.

Just bring in a non-perishable food item and the cost gets taken off of your fines The library hopes the program will bring in more people.

“It gets people to come back into the library,” said Andrew Burns. “They might feel they can’t because they own fines. This way they can clear off their debt and come back in.”

The library said its largest outstanding fine is around $100.
