No charges against driver in La Porte bus crash that killed student

LA PORTE, Ind. - The school bus driver involved in a fatal crash with 15-year-old Julien Hernandez is not being charged in the incident, according to the La Porte Police Department.

Not all test results are back but an alcohol test came back negative for the driver.

According to the incident report from La Porte Police, the driver passed Hernandez riding the scooter as both were traveling east on South Avenue.

Security footage from the bus showed Hernandez traveling at a high rate of speed toward the bus, seemingly not attempting to slow down or look for oncoming traffic before entering the road, police said.

Chief Paul Brettin from the police department released the following statement about the incident:

"My only statement is this was a horrible freak accident and people should let the facts of the investigation guide their feelings and not rumors spread on social media."
