Notre Dame commencement speaker can relate with the class of 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The 2012 graduates had a chance to hear from another Notre Dame alum.

Haley Scott DeMaria, a 1995 graduate, served as this year's commencement speaker.

DeMaria told grads about her recovery from the devastating 1992 bus crash that killed two of her teammates.

In her speech, she talked about making a comeback, and told the class of 2012 that her class had something in common.

They both had to overcome tragedy.

"My undergraduate class of 1995 had to share sadness as well.  The loss of life at a young age is an emotional experience that will stay with you long after you graduate.  I understand," said DeMaria.

The speech was met with a standing ovation.

Graduates and their families say she is a role model for Notre Dame students and alumni.
